Confessions of a Bookworm?

Hi all!

My name is Chiara and I am a bookworm.

It is not often I feel the need to confess in the middle of the night, but I’ve just got home work and a strange question hit me that I would like you to help me with.

Why are we called Bookworms?

What about books and reading books is worm-ish?

Are there not better adjectives that describe us? Rabbit, for example, because my books certainly do multiply like rabbits. Or cats. Cats are, in general, our favourite companions. Why not liken ourselves to them? Sleep most of the time and read the rest? Are we not bookelephants, for we never forget a book we’ve read?

Why are we called Bookworms?

There is probably a very easy answer to this, or somewhere very simple I could look it up, like google. But if I’m honest I think I want human beings’ opinions.

Are we simply Bookworms because we bury ourselves in our books and don’t get much sunlight, or are we Bookworms for another reason?
