Top 5 Wednesday: Nostalgic Ships

Today we’re here for some Top 5 Wednesdays and this week’s topic is Nostalgic Ships.

But first some general house keeping. Top 5 Wednesdays is a book meme created by Lainey and currently hosted by Samantha. Click on each name to find their blog and more about them.

So … Nostalgic ships. So our brief is “Discuss the first fictional couples you ever got butterflies over, or couples you used to be really into when you were younger”.

So starting at number 5

Chloe Saunders and Derek Souza from The Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong

I think I was about twelve/thirteen when I started reading The Darkest Powers Trilogy. I got the book in a group bundle when the Book People had a big sale, they were getting rid of old stock. I picked up with a couple of other books. I loved this book right from the beginning and as soon as I’d finished that one I went out and bought the next two. They were amazing. Kelley Armstrong is a brilliant writer. I love her fantasy and fiction but one of the best parts of the story is Derek and Chloe.

Chloe Saunders is the main character and she is so shy, such a plain Jane. Derek is so opposite, so big in some ways very macho. They are complete opposites. They don’t make sense. But they do. When you start reading it you get this hint that it’s going to happen and you’re rooting for it. You ship it! Even though I’m sure ‘shipping’ wasn’t a thing when I was that age.

Cameron Morgan and Zachary Goode from The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter.

The Gallagher Girls was another one I started reading about the same age and I really ‘shipped’ their relationship. Zack isn’t Cam’s first relationship and it is great to see her grow from her first to her second with Zach. To see her character grow and Zach’s as well. The grow and mature together. They learn to depend on each other and they learn how much they can do without each other. It’s the sort of relationship that you aspire to … minus the guns and fighting and near death experiences.

Here we go …

Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

I still read ever Rick Riordan book that is ever published I love his world of myth and legend. And it all started with Percy. I saw that relationship coming a mile off. From the first moment they meet in the first book to the first kiss and everything else that comes after. I love their relationship from the work go. They fight it and fight it and you know it is inevitable.

I like the inevitable relationships. The ones were you know they’re going to get together but you still doubt it every word you read. Those are the books that make good reading. Those are the books that you keep coming back to.

Number 2

Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

I always call Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the first book that I really read. That I sat down, read start to finish and never wanted to put down. This book turned me into a bookworm. And it’s also the book we’re you start to see the relationship starting to grow. It doesn’t blossom till the next book but you see the seeds there. Harry and Ginny have always been my favourite book couple with the exception of one.

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy

I always find it funny how we say Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. His name is Fitzwilliam Darcy and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. I bet a lot of you are questioning about why Pride and Prejudice is being classed as a nostalgic ship. It’s a pretty heavy book, I agree and I read it when I was twelve. It’s was heavy going for a twelve year old but I loved it and my feeling about Pride and Prejudice are pretty much summed up by what Meg Ryan says in You’ve got Mail.

“Confession: I have read Pride and Prejudice two hundred times. I get lost in the language, words like: Thither. Mischance. Felicity. I am always in agony over whether Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are really going to get together. Read it! I know you’ll love it.”
