Confessions of a Bookworm: Technology

Hi all!

My name is Chiara and I am a Bookworm.

I’m realising as I write this it has been a while since I’ve done a true confession and I’ve missed them.

(I’m warning you now: expect tangents!)

Today’s topic is technology.

I love technology, don’t get me wrong. It makes lives so much easier. Our whole world is so accessible. It saves lives in medicine and with the police and in so, so many ways … but we’re surrounded by it.

Right now I am working on my Mac, I have my tablet on one side of me, and my phone on the other and my google mini is playing music in the background.

We are surrounded by technology!

And I think it is lowering my boredom threshold. Does anyone else ever just sit there and scroll through all the apps they have on their device( whther that be a tablet, an iPad, a phone, a computer and think what on earth do I want to do. None of these apps hold my attention for more than 30 minutes … at most. I scroll back and to, and back and to, and back and to and thinking what am I doing sat here. How have I become this person who live within this world of technology but gets so fed up using it. On the other hand I’m just as bored (sometimes) without it.

The brilliant parts of technology entertain and keep busy my brain while also keeping my hands moving and occupied … a bit like writing a blog. Do you get me?

But some of this stuff that we all play … that is advertised to us soooooo much that we decide to download it because we’re fed up of getting bombarded by it keeping us no more entertained than tapping on glass just to watch the fish swim away.

Now books… (did you really expect this post not to have a book comment to it?) Books are different. I hold the book therefore my hands don’t go wandering and my brain is so busy taking in everything that I’m reading that I don’t get distracted or fed up. I am absorbed in the world so much and don’t want to leave it and when it is finished I usually dive into the next book so fast that I don’t come up for air or I suffer from a book hangover for a few weeks and have to slowly reintroduce myself to reading again.

Maybe we should get rid of technology all together and then I heard myself being reminded that technological advancements save lives in medicine. So I challenge tech companies to give me a piece of technology that makes me as absorbed by it as book do.

I think I’m challenging somebody to create the Oasis but that I will save for another day, another post.

That’s all for now, leave your comments ideas and opinions at the bottom and once again, my name is Chiara and I am a Bookworm.
