Top 10 Tuesday: Freebie!

My name is Chiara and I am a Bookworm.

As you know I have been completing for some time now the Top 10 Tuesday weekly book meme. I quite enjoyed the last semi-freebie topic and when I was brain storming that one with my Dad we mentioned the idea of alternative book titles. I think he and I took the idea in two different directions but I saw it as a chance to involve some foreign languages into my blog. I love foreign languages. In fact for some reason I’ve had La Vie En Rose going round and round in my head for the past week.

But let me give you the topic before I go any further.

Strange Translations of Book Titles.

I have had good fun researching and finding these titles. I have not read all these books these are just interesting titles that I think the translations are with unique, funny or both.

1. The Lion, The White Witch and The Magic Wardrobe

I think this is a pretty easy one to guess but in French The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe translates as Le Lion, La Sorciere Blanche et L’armoire Magique.

2. Catcher Hearts

Guess this if you can? L’attrape-coeurs is the French translation of … any guesses?

The Catcher in the Rye, they look nothing alike do they?

3. The Four Daughters of Doctor March

I think you will only guess this one if you know the story, which I didn’t when I first came across this title while living in Paris, but it is not one I will easily for get.

Les Quatre Filles du Doctuer March is actually Little Women

4. A Man Without Scruples

A man without scruples? A Man Without Scruples? I can see the words passing through your mind as you try to work out what on earth this book could be. To be honest when I saw the translation I was a bit confused and so was everyone I told but when you know what it is it makes a bit more sense.

En Man Utahn Skrupler is, if you haven’t guessed by the cover, is The Great Gatsby in Swedish.

5. Bridge to the Afterlife

I came across four different weird translations of this book title, none of them gave any clue as to the book title inn English. It alluded to the story, which I only know because of the film of the book.

I’ll give you the different ones I’ve found.

Bridge to the Afterlife – Hungarian

Alone on the Otherside – Norwegian

The Bridge to the Other Country – German

The Kingdom of the River – French

Have you guessed what it is yet?

Híd a túlvilágra is actually The Bridge to Terabithia.

6. Animals Everywhere!

Yes the exclamation point is included in the titles of this book, which I can guarantee you will know the titles, even if you haven’t read the book.

Les Animaux Partout! Is the french translation of Animal Farm.

7. Men Who Hate Women

This title isn’t an English work translated into a different language and then translated back. This is the translation of the original title.

Män som hater kvinnor is the swedish original title for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

8. The World is Not a Factory for Fulfilling Wishes

This is a really pessimistic title for a great book that, in English, has a really great title. This translation is taken from Macedonian and don’t worry I won’t type this one out in Cyrillic, or expect you to pronounce it.

This book is The Fault in Our Stars.

9. Fascination, Temptation, Hesitation and Revelation

Don’t worry, this isn’t one book. These are the titles of four books and I actually like these titles for the books better. I think, and when I reveal the books I think you will too, they explain the plot of the book better.
