I know that I’ve been absent the last few days and for that I apologise. I needed a break and work has been really getting me down at the moment. I need to concentrate on that and my mental health at the moment rather than my blog, however I was organised enough to get this book read in plenty of time.

My Thoughts

I want to begin this review by thanking HarperTeen, our wonderful authors and Karina from Afire Pages for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m not sure I can put into words just how much I loved this book.

But here is my attempt.

There are many themes to this book, body positivity, acceptance, self confidence and find yourself. I loved all them and they weave together to create a heartfelt, moving story that left me on the edge of tears at moments.

I can’t decide who I adore more. Chicky, the girl who is determined to be different than everyone expects, Lita, the small girl who just wants one moment in the spotlight, Junior, the misunderstood artist, or Cole, the jock who doesn’t want to be part of that crowd and stands up for everyone.

All our characters have their problems, their goals to achieve, their mountains to climb, but they can’t do it alone, which introduces our final theme, teamwork. None of the book would happen without a team, a group of friends willing to pick you up when you’re hurt, help you through the silliest, strangest of tasks and celebrate with you when you get there.

I’ve read many books before which are wrote from multiple points of view, but I have never read a book where I just know who’s point of view it is from like this one. Chicky and Lita’s narrative voices are so unique and distinctive that even if I picked up the book mid-chapter I would know who was narrating.

I love their journey, but my favourite part of the book may just be ending and all the revelations that occur. I shall leave them as a surprise for you, but I hope that you are surprised by them.

In fact I hope that you read this book. It was spectacular and worth all the time that I took to read it. I really hope that you read it and, if you do, come back here and let me know what you think. I really want your opinions.

Tehlor Kay Mejia is a YA author and poet at home in the wild woods and alpine meadows of Southern Oregon. Anna-Marie McLemore

Anna-Marie McLemore was born in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and taught by their family to hear la llorona in the Santa Ana winds. They are the author of THE WEIGHT OF FEATHERS, a finalist for the 2016 William C.
